When Life Makes You Stop: What a Palm Injury Taught Me About Healing

Sometimes life just makes you stop. Not with a gentle tap on the shoulder, but with a sudden, jarring jolt that turns your entire world upside down.

For me, that jolt happened when glass got inside deep into my palm. What followed was emergency surgery and an experience that honestly tested every single nerve and ounce of patience I had.

The Reality of Pain

If you want to talk about real pain, let’s talk about the raw numbers of that day: 19 times needles were inserted. Six of them went directly into the open wound, and the rest were for the channel and anesthesia. And on top of all that, 10 stitches to hold it all together.

When you go through a physical ordeal like that, the exhaustion can be overwhelming. But the toughest warriors get the toughest battles, and life only tests us because it knows we are built to carry the weight.

Lessons from the Hospital Bed

While I was in the hospital, my world had shrunk to the four corners of my bed, but my eyes were wide open, observing everyone around me. A girl right in front of me was on the phone almost the whole time she was awake, giving every second update of her routine to someone. She was so worried that she needed to keep speaking to her loved one just to feel a little safer.

An elderly lady beside my bed chose a completely different path she simply slept all day to let her body heal in peace. Meanwhile, another woman nearby chose to make light of her own condition, even cracking jokes that somehow managed to make me laugh through my own pain. Amidst all the clinical quiet and worry, I also witnessed the birth of two babies to different mothers. Seeing the pure, incredible joy on those new moms’ faces was profoundly satisfying.

When I finally came back home after discharge, completely drained through and through, the very first thing I did was hug my child and thank God for protecting him from the glass.

Shifting the Perspective

We’ve all asked “Why me?” during our toughest seasons. But as the weeks passed and I learned to navigate life slowly, my perspective started to shift.

What if we aren’t meant to question the hard times? What if we go through them simply because we need to humble down, slow our pace, and truly retrospect?

When we are busy running, achieving, and rushing through life, we rarely stop to think. We are just moving on autopilot. Sometimes, life has to break our routine or even break us a little bit to get our attention. It strips away our rushing ego, forces us to depend on others, and gives us the quiet space to look inward and ask ourselves what really matters.

Trusting the Process

The physical pain heals, the stitches come out, and the scars fade. But the inner shift stays with you.

So, if you are walking through a rough patch right now and wondering why things are so hard, try looking at it differently. Don’t fight the pause. Let it humble you, let it teach you, and trust that it is quietly preparing you for a much stronger tomorrow.

When life forces you to stop, will you fight the pause, or let it heal you?
