Is studying law really worth it: Pros and Cons

Hey Buddy 🙂 Is studying law really worth it: Pros and Cons? Let’s weigh the pros and cons.

You are reading my blog then this means you do have this question in mind. Well, that’s a tricky question but I do have an answer for you.

This blog is for everyone across the globe, so hang on till the end to decide if studying law is worthwhile or not.

I am a lawyer and I completed my graduation in the year 2012. I did a 5-year law course. Thereafter I worked at different places which include Junior to Senior Lawyer, Firm Practice, and Corporate practice as well.

Well, currently I am attached to a US-based Law firm and it’s a remote job. I choose to WFH because I have a baby to take care of.

I have worked under the best lawyers of my city, represented cases before Judges at High Court, and held a good position in one of the elite law firms. Was studying law the right choice for me? Looking back, definitely yes.

I will give you my answer but let me break the ice for you. If you choose to be a lawyer, then there are a few things you must do in order to lead a good life as a lawyer.

The most important step to enjoy this career is getting admitted to a good college under a renowned University. See, I am saying from my personal experience,

Top Law firms prefer candidates that pass from top universities. The reason is simple — those 3 or 5 years that you give to your education is the prime time for you to get polished and ready for the future.

Only if you chose to work for a firm. So, weigh the decision: study law or not?

But in case you want to practice law — all you need is to get the law degree, deep knowledge, readiness to work for long hours under a senior lawyer for vast experience, and firm determination that you want to do your own practice someday. In my 10 years of being a lawyer, I realized that I want to work globally. I wanted to gain knowledge across the globe with respect to law.

That is one of the reasons I applied to all International firms that offer remote opportunities. But that might not be the case with you, so if you are going to be a lawyer, I suggest you trust the process. Don’t pick and choose from the beginning.

Learn to seek Law from every corner. With the due course of time, you will realize what exactly you want to do. Yet, consider whether studying law is something you want.

The answer to the question is — A BIG YES : Studying law is worth studying as a CAREER.

The Pros : You will never go out of work as a lawyer and that is a reality. All you need to do is keep gaining knowledge in your area of practice. Your work will spread mostly by word of mouth.

You will always have a running source of income because you can opt to choose to take up petty cases which eventually will give you solid income.

The respect as a lawyer is immense, something nobody can take away from you. Reflecting on whether you should study law, the career promises respect.

You can choose to work globally and that’s the best part. You need to keep updating yourself and end up earning like anything.

The Cons : The first few years of being a lawyer are going to be pretty rough. Learning is a process and it takes time.

Since learning takes time, earning will also take time. In the initial years, you might not earn that much.

Very long hours of work. This is law and what you are handling might end up putting someone under bars; therefore, your 24 hours will be just work, work, and more work.

Handling a very strong opposition is again a learning opportunity for you.

Well If you chose to be a lawyer “Be a righteous one”.
