What My Environment Taught Me: 7 Habits for a Better Life

I have always believed that the world is our greatest teacher. We often think of learning as something that happens in a classroom, but the most important lessons are usually “caught,” not taught.

“In my journey of personal growth, I have realized that the habits we absorb from our environment shape our destiny.” Without much effort, we absorb the habits and energies of the people around us.

In my life, I have realized that what we give to the world is exactly what we receive back. Some of these things are easy to see, while others are quiet and hidden, but they all shape who we are.

1. The Protective Power of a Silent Prayer

One of the most beautiful habits I ever picked up came from watching my paternal uncle and aunt. Every day, as one of them left for work or their child left for school, the other would stand at the door. I could sense a quiet energy in them—a silent prayer for safe travels and a good day.

It is so reassuring to know that a single, quiet prayer can act as a shield for the people we love. This inconspicuous act of kindness taught me that we don’t always need to do something big to care for someone; sometimes, just holding them in our thoughts is enough to protect them.

2. Finding Joy in Presentation and Self-Care

Growing up in a middle-class family with my two sisters, I saw how hard my parents worked. My mother always made sure we wore fresh, clean clothes, even if they weren’t new. After I got married, I noticed my husband loved wearing nice, new clothes.

At first, I thought it was a waste of money for something that eventually wears out. But when I asked him why he did it, he said something that changed my mind. He told me that it is important to feel good.

When we look in the mirror and like what we see, it gives us joy and helps us start the day on a high note. Now, I make it a point to get ready every day, even when I am just at home, because it keeps my spirit high and my mind positive.

3.The Art of Generosity: Giving Without Hesitation

I also learned the art of generosity from my mother. She has such a big heart that even when she had very little, she would happily give her things to others as gifts.

I used to ask her why she gave things away that she might need later. She explained that while she might use it, the joy the other person felt right then was a certainty.

She taught me that if we have something extra that we aren’t using, we should give it to someone who will truly cherish it. Because of her, I regularly give away my belongings that I feel might give joy to others.

There is a special kind of happiness that comes from sharing what you have with those in need.

4. Setting Boundaries to Protect Your Peace

While my mother taught me to give, my father taught me how to protect my space. He is a very hardworking man who wears a strong “armour.”

People often call him difficult, but because I know him so closely, I see it as his way of protecting his family. He never allows anyone to cross the line. I picked up this habit of setting boundaries. I am good to everyone, but I do not let people enter my heart unless I am sure they are worth the space and time.

Learning to say no and not letting everyone come too close is not being mean; it is a way of guarding your peace and your energy.

5. Resilience

This strength is what helped me try again with my blog. I actually started writing blogs few years ago, and I even opened a dedicated site in 2022.

But back then, I failed because I had too many things to manage at once. Even though I have even more responsibilities today, I am returning to my writing with a heart that refuses to give up. I learned this resilience from a father figure I call ‘Uncle.’

He is going through so much pain in his personal life, yet he never looks defeated. Whenever things look dark for me, I remember his winner’s spirit and I keep pushing forward with my site.

6.The Spiritual Practice

My spiritual practice also plays a huge role in how I interact with the world. As a practitioner of Nichiren Daishonin’s Buddhism, I am trained to be grateful for everything—the people, the situations, and even the challenges.

I say “thank you” to everyone I meet, from those in high positions to the maids and delivery guys. I truly feel that acknowledging the wonderful work people are doing has a massive impact.

It is a simple act of respect, but it recognizes the value in every human life and changes the energy around you.

7.The Lesson on Loss

Finally, losing my grandmother in 2022 taught me the most painful lesson: people leave and they never come back. Once they are gone, you can never hear their voice or touch them again.

This loss made me realize that I must cherish my relationships while I can. I give my heart, love, and respect to everyone in my life now.

I make sure that no part of my heart is left with the feeling that I could have loved someone more. By cherishing every moment, I make sure my life is full of love instead of regret.
